The Consumer Rights Directive
Directive 2011/83/EU sets the EU base for online shopping rights, including the 14 day right to change your mind on most distance sales.

Nov 2023
Directive 2023/2673 is adopted
The EU agrees the new rules on distance marketing of financial services. This is where the online withdrawal button comes from.

Dec 2025
Deadline for national law
EU countries had until 19 December 2025 to write the new rules into their own national law. This step is called transposition.

Jun 2026
The rules start to apply
From 19 June 2026 the new obligations apply in practice. Online sellers should have an easy, clear withdrawal flow ready.
